« Granicus Selected in 100 Companies that Matter Most for Online Video »

Granicus was handpicked as one of the most important companies in online video in the inaugural launch of Streaming Media 100 – The Companies that Matter Most in Online Video, presented by the leading online video industry magazine Streaming Media. Other major industry companies such as Microsoft, YouTube, Netflix and Amazon were also named in the list. This reiterates Granicus' #1 position in the government market for online video.

The selection process, which started with approximately 200 streaming media companies, was about finding the companies that have been the most important, most innovative, and have had the most impact on the streaming media industry in the recent past and are likely to continue to do so in the future.

“The companies in the Streaming Media 100 represent many different pieces of the online video ecosystem,” says Streaming Media editor Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen, “but they all have one thing in common: The world of online video today would be markedly different without any of them. Each one, in its own way, has made the online video industry what it is today and is pushing it towards the future.”

Interestingly, Granicus, which services the streaming media of around a thousand different government agencies, was the only streaming media company that focuses on open government video initiatives to make the list.

“It is a privilege for me to stand here today and announce that we’ve been awarded as one of the Streaming Media 100,” said Tom Spengler, Granicus CEO. “Streaming media is not only the future of entertainment, education and communication, the innovations that Granicus have made in the public sector establishes it as a critical force in the future of open government.”

Granicus’ video innovation comes largely in the indexing of live government video with open government meta data including government meeting agendas, mintues, etc. The end result is that while watching the videos, viewers can access relevant supporting materials like staff reports which are displayed alongside the video. Government transparency at its finest. Additionally, they are able to jump to particular items of interest with index points. Another exciting feature is being able to quickly share the videos to social media sites or by copying and embedding portions of a meeting or an entire video across any blog or public website. And, for those viewers who wish to watch or listen to the videos from their mobile device can do so using MP3 and MP4 downloadable formats. Granicus continues to innovate it's streaming platform with the addition of new software modules and the expansion of on-demand H.264.
